Our History

No story of Coveleigh would be complete without reference to the historically interesting Wainwright family. The Wainwrights owned considerable property in Manhattan, where they lived in the 1800’s. The family summered in Rye where they purchased most of the property on Milton Point along Stuyvesant and Van Wagenen Avenues. Coveleigh's beautiful Georgian Colonial clubhouse was built between 1902 and 1904. In the early 1900’s the Wainwright family lived in the fifty room home and carriage house on 18.5 acres. The front exhibition tennis court was originally built for the family’s use.

Coveleigh Club had its beginning on the 9th of December, 1933, when six very determined and farsighted individuals believed a family club could survive in the midst of a depression. Coveleigh organizers were about to name the club “Shenorock Beach Club” when Townsend Wainwright, son of Richard Tighe Wainwright, told them about his father’s original selection of the name “Coveleigh” for the estate. Cove means a small bay and lea means a meadow or “pasture.”

There have been many changes since the Club was organized in 1933. Progress has been accomplished without changing the original purpose for creating our Club. To this day Coveleigh remains a family club, operated and maintained to offer a wide selection of facilities for its members.

Many modern improvements have been made over the years without losing the charm, grace, elegance and warmth that were originally a part of this family estate. Throughout the ensuing decades the lawn bowling green, boating facilities, and additional tennis courts were added. The original formal gardens in the lawn adjacent to the shore were replaced by a pool in 1964. In the early part of this century, the cabanas were updated, additional platform tennis courts were added, the carriage house was renovated to accommodate our growing tennis and camp programs, and the west porch was enclosed with all glass walls. In 2016, we welcomed the newest addition to our club: a state - of - the - art heated swimming pool.

Coveleigh in the future will strive to maintain the same goals of the original founders: enjoyment, entertainment, and physical recreation. Future additions will endeavor to preserve and enhance the charm of our beautiful Clubhouse and grounds. The Coveleigh membership is dedicated to preserving and improving our remarkable legacy, and the club will continue to thrive ... It is a great place to be!
